eSIM is no longer needed. Smartphones on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will receive an integrated SIM card - iSIM

Qualcomm and Thales have unveiled the first GSMA-certified embedded SIM card ready for commercial use. Embedded in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform, iSIM supports the same cyber security standards and "anywhere, anywhere" connectivity as eSIM.

The new iSIM is fully compliant with the GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning standard; this means that it can be remotely controlled via any standard platform. To activate or change information about their card (change the tariff or even the operator), customers do not need to visit a physical store - they can do it remotely.

“The world's first iSIM security certification from the GSMA is the result of years of intensive development by Qualcomm Technologies and Thales. Along with the growing popularity of eSIM, Thales 5G iSIM gives device manufacturers and mobile operators even more freedom to offer their customers wireless connectivity, as well as more interesting and affordable product designs,” said Guillaume Lafay, Vice President of Embedded Products, Thales Mobile.

All functions of a conventional SIM card are built directly into the device hardware. The iSIM footprint is 1mm2 (more than 100 times the size of a traditional nanoSIM card at 12.3 x 8.8mm), and the lack of a physical slot can be used for a slightly larger battery or other components.

Which smartphones will receive iSIM has not yet been reported. Last year, Vodafone, Qualcomm and Thales showed off the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 using integrated SIM technology.

By 2027, global iSIM shipments are expected to be 300 million units. Visit the Thales website for a detailed overview of the new standard and its key features.
