To do this, they will hire 550 employees of the startup Argo AI that stopped working last year.
American automaker Ford Motor Co. creates a division that will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for self-driving cars, Interfax-Kazakhstan reports.
The new unit, called Latitude, will hire 550 employees from self-driving startup Argo AI, which shut down last year, Market Watch reported.
Latitude will be headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a self-driving car testing facility in Greenville, South Carolina. In addition, Latitude will have engineering hubs in California and Michigan.
The division's team will work, among other things, to improve the Ford BlueCruise driver assistance system, Ford said.
The automaker wound up investing in Argo AI in October, figuring it would be difficult for the startup to reach a profitable level for the foreseeable future. Ford wrote off $2.7 billion due to the closure of Argo AI, which also lost the backing of another investor, Volkswagen AG.
Ford shares are down 26% over the past 12 months.
